Protein Power is the low-carb, high-protein diet and bestselling book from authors Michael R. Eades, MD and Mary Dan Eades, MD., who are also husband and wife. According to the authors, their diet plan will help you “Lose Weight, Feel Fit and Boost your Health – in just weeks!”

In essence, Protein Power is a diet that focuses on an eating plan that is low in carbohydrates and high in protein. It provides followers with plenty of scientific explanations about the primary hormones responsible for turning food into energy in our body, insulin and glucagons. The idea behind the diet is that by restricting carbohydrates, a person will reduce their insulin level. This will result in the body producing more glucagon, which aids in the burning of stored fat. According to the doctors, repeatedly doing this over a long period of time will help melt the fat away.

In terms of what foods are allowed for this diet plan, dieters can eat the following protein: poultry, fish, red meat, eggs, low-fat cheese, and tofu. They are also allowed leafy green vegetables, broccoli, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, zucchini, green beans, celery, mushrooms, asparagus, and cucumber. Some fats are allowed (ex. avocado, olive oil and butter), and dieters are expected to consume 25 grams of fiber each day. Diet soda, sweeteners, wine and light beer are allowed in moderation.

In addition, to balance out nutritional needs, the doctors recommend taking a minimum of 90 milligrams of potassium, as well as high-quality vitamin and mineral supplements. They also recommend that followers engage in resistance training, such as lifting weights, to help burn stored fat.

The information provided in the Protein Power book is based on cutting-edge research. Regulating blood sugar levels can have a positive impact on the body. According to their official website, the doctors have spent over 20 years helping people “lose weight and solve their weight related health problems”. Their Protein Power book provides sample menus of more than 100 recipes. They have also written 13 other books and their site contains blogs, a forum and resources.

Low-carb diets can be difficult to follow because they require you to cut out a lot of foods from your diet. Therefore, some people may find them difficult to follow. While it is possible to lose weight following this diet, it may not be practical for some individuals and may be difficult to follow as a lifestyle.

Even though the Protein Power diet was created by doctors, their advice should not supersede advice that is provided by your personal healthcare provider. It is strongly recommended that you first consult with your own doctor before engaging in this diet program.
