SlimFast is a diet plan that has been around for many years. The major difference between the program today and the one from the past is it no longer exclusively offers shakes. The plan has been upgraded and now concentrates on meal replacements (shakes, smoothies or bars), 100-calorie snacks and one (500 – 600 calorie) meal a day.

Often called the “3-2-1 Plan”, every day, those who follow the SlimFast program consume three snacks, two meal replacements and one meal.

At the time this review was written, according to the official SlimFast site, the meal replacements include a choice of four shake flavors (chocolate, strawberry, vanilla and caramel), two smoothies (vanilla or chocolate) and three meal replacement bars (Caramel Almond Sea Salt, Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew, and Dark Chocolate Sea Salt).

As for snacks, dieters can choose from five snacks, such as Sour Cream & Online Baked Chips, Peanut Butter Chocolate Snack Bites, S’mores Drizzled Crisps, and so on. They can also opt for fruit as a snack (ex. oranges, banana, pear, cherries, grapes, etc.), as well as sorbet, carrot sticks and a few other non-prepackaged alternatives.

When it comes to meals, SlimFast provides recipes for dieters to follow. However, the overall recommendation is to fill half of the plate with vegetables, a quarter with lean protein and the remaining quarter with a whole wheat starch.

Nothing is off limits on this diet. It’s simply about controlling portions. Therefore, most people shouldn’t have a problem following it, especially because it is a structured plan that does not require those who follow it to count calories.

If the diet is followed as directed and combined with regular exercise, it is very possible for a person to lose weight on the SlimFast plan. Research has shown that when people consume meal replacements or portion-controlled meals, they tend to lose more weight. Due to the fact that SlimFast is a low-calorie diet plan that involves meal replacements, it can be effective for weight loss and weight management.

Another plus about this plan is that it offers dieters convenience by providing them with pre-made meal replacements and snacks. For the most part, customers like the taste of SlimFast products.

An addition bonus is the recommended meals all make 4 servings and the recipes are provided on the site along with the nutrition facts.

SlimFast products can be purchased at several retailers including Amazon, CVS Pharmacy, Walmart, and Kroger to name a few.

The one major downside of SlimFast, as is the case with many meal replacement diets, is that the convenience of purchasing pre-made products comes at a cost. Although this cost may not be a problem for some, it could become problematic for those with tighter budgets or who have families and must purchase a variety of food for other people.

Furthermore, at the time this review was written, on the official website, the company claims that the SlimFast plan is “clinically proven to lose weight and keep it off.” There were no references to studies provided on the site to backup this statement.

In addition, the number of products offered by SlimFast is limited, so, repeatedly eating the same foods could become tiresome. Also, while the recipes for the meals are provided, you will need to purchase the ingredients and make them yourself.

SlimFast may not be an ideal weight loss plan for everyone. You should tell your doctor about your plans to start this diet, especially if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, are nursing or have a medical condition.
