Do you want to lose weight without having to give up your favorite carbs like bread and pasta? If so, the CarbLovers Diet may be the weight loss diet you’ve been waiting for. As you might guess from the name of this particular weight loss plan, this diet doesn’t ban the eating of carbohydrates, in fact, it encourages it.

The CarbLovers Diet claims that those who follow its methods will lose up to eight pounds in 30 days by combining healthy foods with those that are high in resistant starch. This type of starch is difficult for the small intestine to digest and passes through the body without entering the bloodstream to become glucose. This starch helps you to feel full. According to the authors of the CarbLovers Diet book, Ellen Kunes and Frances Largeman-Roth, RD., this type of starch also promotes fat burning and helps to keep blood sugar levels balanced.

The diet refers to the resistant carbs as “carb stars”. It includes foods like garbanzo beans, lentils, brown rice, green bananas, legumes, uncooked toasted oatmeal, cooked and cooled potatoes, and whole wheat pasta. That being said, while these resistant starches are encouraged, refined starches like white rice, white pasta, white bread, and low-fiber cereals, are discouraged.

For each meal, dieters are to fill one quarter of their plate with resistant starch and the rest of the plate with vegetables, fruits, good fats, lean meats, and low-fat dairy. During the first week of the diet you are to consume 1,200 calories daily and from that point on you are to eat 1,600 calories per day (three meals and two snacks).

Exercise is encouraged, including cardio workouts on some days and strength training twice a week.


If you love carbs and you don’t want to give them up, this diet will likely appeal to you. It does a good job of combining diet with exercise, which is important for both health and weight loss. The book includes many recipes to help you make tasty meals.


While there are not many food restrictions, this diet is still very challenging to follow due to its restrictions regarding calories. This is especially an issue during the first phase of the diet when followers are required to consume only 1,200 calories a day. Even after the first phase, dieters are only allowed 1,600 calories per day. This may not be enough calories for certain people. Not eating the amount of calories you require in a day could lead to health problems and will slow down your weight loss efforts.

When you do not consume enough calories, your body kicks into starvation mode, which causes it to store fat and burn muscle. It is your body’s natural way of conserving energy, but it also slows down your metabolism and makes it hard for you to lose weight.
