The Cheater’s Diet is a calorie-controlled weight loss plan created by Paul Rivas, MD. In essence, the way that this diet works is followers eat a Mediterranean-like diet throughout the week, but can then “cheat” on their diet on the weekend. On the cover of Rivas’ book called “The Cheater’s Diet: Lose Weight by Taking Weekends Off”, it states that the diet is “the medically proven way to supercharge your weight loss, break through diet ruts, and stay thin for good.” In other words, this diet claims that it can help you lose weight and manage your weight permanently.

According to Rivas, cheating on your diet on the weekend can boost your metabolism, which reverses the metabolic slowdown that occurs when you limit your calorie intake, which is what you would do for most of the week following this diet plan. Furthermore, Rivas says that “cheating” also bolsters a person’s resolve to eat well for the rest of the week.

From Monday to Friday, you are supposed to have three servings of fruit per day (with the exception of bananas) and a minimum of four vegetable servings. At meal times, half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, one quarter should be lean protein (ex. chicken, beans, fish), and one quarter, whole grains.

For these five days, bread, sugar, potatoes, white rice, saturated fats (ex. butter, cream, and most fried foods), and alcohol are off-limits. However, all of these can be enjoyed on Saturday and Sunday. On weekends, you simply add an additional 10 calories per day for each pound that you weigh. You can eat whatever you want as long as you don’t blow this extra calorie limit.

Rivas recommends two days of exercise and additional “lifestyle” exercises, such as house cleaning, to accompany his diet plan. He also suggests that followers include certain supplements in their diet like yerba mate, green tea extract, 5-HTP, etc. However, the supplements are optional.


While dieters do need to control their intake of calories from Monday through Friday, they can enjoy fun foods on the weekend, which gives them something to look forward to. This may help keep up their motivation to continue with the low calorie diet for the remainder of the week.

To follow this diet, all that you require is the book, which can be purchased online for a reasonable price. The food recommended for this diet should easily fit into your typical grocery bill.


The main problem with the Cheater’s Diet is that there is no evidence that it is actually effective for helping a person to lose weight. In spite of his claims, Rivas does not provide research to support his theory that restricting calories for five days and then eating more calories for two days out of a week, helps to boost metabolism.

Furthermore, this diet will require a lot of personal willpower, as some dieters may find it harder to go back to restricting their calories and food choices after they’ve had a taste of fun.

Prior to following this diet, you should first talk to your doctor about it to obtain his or her opinion. While it could turn out that the Cheater’s Diet is worth trying for you, on the other hand, there may be a weight loss diet that is better suited to your lifestyle and needs.
